What is Encaustic

Charlotte StrongComment

Encaustic is one of the oldest forms of painting. Maybe even the oldest. It is a process of mixing beeswax with damar resin and pigment. Each layer of paint, each brush stroke has to be fused with heat. The word encaustic means "to burn in." Encaustic must be painted on a solid surface. A fabric canvas simply will not last. Unless it is first applied to wood.

The longer an encaustic painting ages the sturdier it becomes. The wax and resin go through a process of settlement.  A kind of marriage.  That becomes more solid with age.

Encaustic can be scratched just as acrylic oil or resin can be scratched. But with encaustic,  a scratch can be buffed out. As with all forms of art, please do not expose encaustic to direct sunlight. Doing so results in fading of paint pigments.

Commission piece

Charlotte StrongComment

I'm working on a piece for an office. I thought I would post some pictures and describe the work.

She wanted abstract. A black and white piece. I like to add words to art. So I wrote some poetry for the piece. It is 36 x 48 x 2 gallery wrapped canvas. I started by adding some paste to the canvas to add texture and depth. Then many layers of white paint. Then Inking in the words to give the piece a look of raining words. It has a first coat of resin. I will decide if I want to add more words to give it a floating words look.

Update:

The piece is finished. I'm posting a picture of the completed piece. The texture disappeared under the resin. The finished piece became modern minimalist. Raining words. A word puzzle. Something that you study to make out what is written in the painting.

It reads: Everything changes. The art of letting go is in recognizing that everything changes. The leaves the wind the direction of the mind. The road. The path that the life takes us down. Everything changes from time to time. To hold on to hurt, pain and old wounds is like holding on to a leaky boat in a river. It is better to let go an go with the flow. Let the river take you to shallow ground. There is always hope for a better tomorrow. Letting go is allowing the soul to be given to fly. Fly free of fear, worry, doubt and suffering. Let go and be given to fly. Free your mind of suffering and you free your body of pain. Free your soul to be given to fly. Everything changes. Lava flows and land forms new ground in the sea. The earth shakes and a mountain moves from where it once stood the test of time. Everything changes. So let it change. Let it be. But. . . Some things stay the same.

Finished piece.
